Profiles of client execs/org/focus include:

  • CEO of post-A round SaaS, focused on articulating a scalable sales operation consistent with overall strategy to enable B-round funding
  • Foundation executive focused on helping a major not-for-profit grant recipient become less dependent on excess external funding
  • Operating partner at a mid-sized PE firm, seeking independent perspective on whether a portfolio company will be able to execute on an aggressive strategy
  • GM/CEO of a $500m company facing a large one-time business opportunity or threat
  • VP of Strategy 
    • With a long-tail of portfolio businesses that aren't large enough to dedicate enough of the team's attention
    • Or, has an understaffed strategy team with too many full-time vacancies
    • Or, has a team has a number of new team members without direct consulting experience who require hands-on mentorship


Generally speaking, ideal client profile is:

  • A senior executive focused on the design/execution of sustainable business models...
    • Particularly troubleshooting operational barriers to growth ("how" more than "what")
    • Often in sales operations
    • Looking for expertise in general leadership, pattern matching, storytelling, analytics, and troubleshooting (not Rolodex)

  • ... at a small-ish organization ($5-50m annual revenue) focused on rapid, efficient growth... 
    • Well funded, either via cash flow or external financing
    • Growth is recognizably constrained by efficient use of capital
      • Org not looking spend money like it's 1999
    • Looking for temporary executive-level  help
      • Not yet large enough to benefit from cash commitment/dilution expense of full-time hire
      • Urgent need to tell a more coherent story (for execution or fundraising)

  • ...or a medium-sized organization ($50-500m annual revenue) focused on passing a point of inflection (scaling, pivot, turnaround)...
    • Facing an existential-level problem that requires a good-enough solution... the first time... in a reasonable amount of time
    • Needs an interim executive to tackle a particular strategic initiative...
      • Existing executive team lacks bandwidth or appropriate experience 
    • ... and that initiative has executive ownership and board visibility/oversight
      • Day-to-day staffed (full or part-time) by existing employees who will carry it forward once the consultant is finished
      • When required for speed or cost efficiency, can be augmented by appropriate consultants from several of my professional networks

  • ... in an industry where deep understanding of scale cost of operations (fixed/variable expenses vs fixed/variable revenue) is critical to a sustainable business model.  Past client industries include software, hardware, medical devices, education, robotics, athletic gear, specialty chemicals, and insurance (commercial line P&C).  Resume available on request
